Blog:How to Choose Between Cosmetic Dentistry Options

If you have ever caught yourself pressing your lips together in a photo or covering your mouth when you laugh, it is time to change something.
Cosmetic dentistry offers a range of options to make changes, from whitening and bonding to veneers, crowns, and clear aligners. With so many choices, the real task is figuring out where to start. That begins with one straightforward question: What bothers you most?
Do you look in the mirror and wish your teeth were simply whiter? Whitening is often the easiest way to make a noticeable change. In one visit, your dentist can lighten your teeth several shades.
The results are not forever, but they can hold up for a couple of years if you avoid heavy staining. Whitening is great for surface discoloration. If the stain is deep or your teeth have always been darker, there are other paths to consider.
Maybe the color is fine. What bothers you is a chipped corner on a front tooth. A gap that has been there since you were young. A tooth that looks a little too small compared to the others.
For small fixes like these, bonding is often the answer. Your dentist applies a tooth-colored resin right onto the tooth and shapes it by hand. There is no drilling unless a tiny bit of roughening is needed. It can be done in one visit. Bonding is affordable and looks natural. The trade-off is that it does not last forever. It can chip or stain over time, and you will likely need to have it touched up after five to eight years.
If you want results that will keep you smiling for years, go for veneers. Veneers are thin porcelain shells. They cover the front of a tooth and look natural. They are great because they resist stains, they can close gaps, and they can even fix uneven shapes. Unlike bonding, they do not need frequent touch-ups.
But veneers ask something of you in return. A small layer of enamel must be removed so the shell sits flush. Once that enamel is gone, it does not grow back. The tooth will always need a veneer or some covering. The cost is higher than bonding, but a well-made set of veneers can last ten to fifteen years or longer.
A large filling, a crack, or a root canal can leave a tooth looking unattractive and fragile. The solution here is getting a crown, which will encase the tooth completely, making it strong and good-looking again. With proper care, a crown can last over twenty years. It does require more tooth reduction than a veneer, but the extra protection is well worth it.
If your teeth are healthy and the right size but are crooked or crowded, moving them into the right position can make a big difference. Clear aligners like Invisalign can straighten your teeth without using brackets or wires. After your teeth are aligned, you might not need bonding or veneers, or you may only need a small touch-up.
Some people feel their smile shows too much gum. If this bothers you and you want a more balanced look, gum contouring can reshape your gumline. It is a minor procedure, and the results last permanently.
